In this role-playing exercise, students, providers, and staff take on the role of "patients" seeking medical care from "doctors" who are part of the local Deaf community. Our objective is for participants to leave with potential solutions and resources for effective communication, which can help reduce healthcare disparities. A key takeaway is that Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind individuals are not flawed; rather, it's the medical system that can fail to accommodate them. Deaf-Centric Hospital will replicate the appearance of hospitals and doctors' offices as they exist today. Participants will engage with members of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind communities, who have been trained to portray healthcare professionals such as physicians, pharmacists, receptionists, and dentists.
